Linna Zhu, a housing finance policy expert at the Urban Institute, spoke with PBS affiliate WNPT about how high housing-cost burdens affect senior renters. “We find that 26 percent of senior renters are cost burdened, and another 35 percent are severely cost burdened, indicating there’s more than 60 percent of renters in total constrained by this housing cost burden,” Zhu said. “If we look at the statistics from 2019 to 2020, the share of senior households who experienced homelessness has increased more than 37 percent, which is a huge jump.”
